Welcome to Sammallahdenmäki
There are about 40 burial mounds along a guided nature trail around the area. Sammallahdenmäki was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Sammallahdenmäki is located about 20 km from the centre of Rauma.
Sammallahdenmäki in a nutshell
Bronze age (1500-500 pp.) burial site. During the Bronze Age the lifestyle changes from the nomadic way of life to the agricultural lifestyle. Burial customs changed due to cultural influence from Scandinavia.

A summer guide is on site in July daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Free of charge. The tour starts from the southern info-point: Savulaaksontie 181, Rauma.

Accessibility and services
Access to Sammallahdenmäki is free and a self-guided visit is an easy way to explore this interesting site. The visiting season is from 1 May to 31 October. There is no winter maintenance.
Sammallahdenmäki is not an accessible site. The terrain is rocky and difficult to negotiate in places. It is advisable to bring good footwear.
Information boards with information about Sammallahdenmäki and the Bronze Age in Finland are available at the information points. Site brochures are also available. There is a guided trail around the area. The information boards and signposts along the trail are in Finnish, Swedish and English.
How to get here
We recommend arriving at Savulaaksontie 181, Rauma
The second parking area and information point can be found at Sammallahdentie, Rauma.
Both parking areas can be reached by bus. It is recommended that groups are taken to one end and picked up at the other.
There is no public transport to Sammallahdenmäki, the nearest bus stop is about 5 km away in the centre of Lapland. It is easy to get to the site by private transport. There are good signposts at all approach points. The Rauma outdoor map shows a cycling route from Rauma city centre.
Visitor instructions
The burial mounds at Sammallahdenmäki are protected under the Ancient Monuments Act.
Sammallahdenmäki is also a natural site where safety should be taken in to account at all time by walking only on marked routes.
Please do not climb on the burial cairns, it can be dangerous for you and the structure of the burial.
Sammallahdenmäki is a burial ground, please remember to respect those buried here.
The stones in the mounds are not be moved and you cannot make your own stone arrangements in the area.
Please remember “Everyman’s Rights” and responsibilities. You can pick berries and mushrooms, but it is particularly important that you do not build open fires or barbecue in the area.
We recommend that dogs are kept on a lead during your visit. The area is home to many different species of birds and this should be taken into account, especially during the nesting season.
