History

The house, called Bungi, belonged to Niilo Sorrén in 1756. In 1800 there were two houses called Bungi. Number 233 was owned by the patron Matti Helstén.

Fire insurances

The house was insured by sailor C. W. Strid in 1873. There were three buildings on the property: a residential building on Vähäkoulunkatu, an outbuilding on Länsikatu and another on the east side of the property. The main building was a log building, erected in the old days, in good condition, boarded up and partly painted in red. The rooms consisted of a hall, a baker’s room, two chambers and a hallway, and fireplaces with three tiled ovens and a baker’s oven. The exterior was of late log and boarded construction, unpainted and with a wooden staircase. Another outbuilding was also of recent construction and had a shed and tool shed. The buildings had a pitched roof. The driveway and fence were also insured.

Modification drafts

The modification drawing by Arvi Tuomokoski dates from 1906. There is a residential building on the plot along Vähäkoulukatu. It was a semi-detached house with a hallway and a small hall chamber in addition to the living room and hall. In front of the entrance was a plank porch. The house was wider than the rest of the building. The intention was to convert the space to create two dwellings. The living room was divided by a partition into a kitchen and a room, and the hallway and hall chamber were combined into a kitchen with a baking oven. A long plank porch was built on the courtyard side, with entrances to both apartments. The dwelling was raised during the renovation, and the ovens were moved from the roof to the gable end of the building. The building was given an understated neo-renaissance look. It was horizontally planked and the framing of the six-paned windows was rather simple, with a neo-Renaissance effect. The exterior of the building was also renovated. It became a slightly narrower, hipped-roofed board building with a latrine and three sheds. A previous separate small toilet building was demolished. A handsome gateway was added between the residential and outbuilding, along the Pappilankatu.

In 1968, changes were made to the residential building. The apartments were combined and equipped with electric heating, and a bathroom was added. A small toilet and closet had been in the building before. It had apparently served both apartments, as it was accessed from a shared porch. The old fireplaces were dismantled, but a fireplace was built in the living room. In 1973, a sauna and garage were added to the outbuilding.
