History

In 1756 the plot belonged to Sundell. In 1800, the plot was owned by the sorter’s widow Regina Wessman. She also had a field.

Fire insurances

The buildings were insured against fire in 1889 by the workman Johan Sandell. There were three buildings on the site: a long angled building along Koulukatu and Pappilankatu, a small building along Kiviniemenkatu, which was built together with the building facing Koulukatu, and an outbuilding on the northern boundary of the site, which was built onto the building facing Kiviniemenkatu.

The long building was a residential building, made of logs and in good condition. It had been built in earlier times, but had been renovated in the summers of 1888 and -89, when the building was, among other things, planked. It was unpainted and covered with boards. The building had seven living rooms, a baker’s and kitchen, two boarded chimneys and a log porch. The building on Kiviniemenkatu was a log outbuilding, which had been thoroughly renovated in the summer of 1888 and had a boarded roof. The building was unpainted. There were stables and a barn. The outbuilding on the north side of the courtyard was built partly of logs and partly of boards. It was old and unpainted. The building contained a lorry shed, a log and board shed, and a log lean-to. The building was now in good condition. A driveway gate was also insured, with a pedestrian gate next to it.

Modification drafts

In 1887, changes were made to the outbuildings on the property. The outbuildings included a stable and barn along Länsikatu and a privy, log sheds, a log sleeping car and a boarded-up truck shed on the northern boundary. The roof of the outbuilding was lined with the same wide horizontal boarding as the residential building. The main window of the residential building is visible in the façade photograph. It is six-panelled and classically lined. On the courtyard side, the exterior is clad in narrower boards.

The residential building on the southern boundary of the plot was re-boarded in 1913 by Arvi Leikari. The walls of the building were covered with sheet metal, the attic part with horizontal boarding. The T-shaped windows are framed with simple mouldings. A gateway was made on the side facing Pappilankatu, with stone pillars. Both the driveway gates and the separate access gate are closed at the bottom, with a grille at the top.

In 1974 and 1975, changes were planned for the building. Two large, modern apartments were added. The heating stoves were dismantled, but a fireplace was added to the living room of both apartments. At the same time, an outbuilding wing on the northern boundary of the plot, which had a carport and a toilet, was demolished. Initially, a separate sauna was planned for both apartments, but eventually the common sauna and boiler room were placed in the former stables and barns of the wing facing Länsikatu. The street facades remained unchanged, but the courtyard side of the building had its entrances and one window removed.

In 1989, the layout of the apartments was changed and some toilets were relocated. The fireplaces were marked on the drawing for demolition. It is possible that they were not actually built.
