History

In 1756 the park belonged to Strandstén and in 1800 the owner of the land is mentioned as the turner Johan Berger. In addition to the house, he owned a rich two barrel acres of arable land, a meadow, a barn and a threshing floor.

Modification drafts

In 1898, Arvi Forsman drew an alteration drawing of the buildings on a plot of land owned by the then sea captain J. Hellström. According to the layout plan, there were three residential buildings on the plot, one along Länsikatu, the others on the southern and northern boundaries. On the western boundary of the plot was an outbuilding with the wing part facing the courtyard. All the buildings were to be thoroughly renovated. The residential building along the street was a semi-detached house with two large living rooms, a hallway and a hall chamber. Now the wall between the hall and the hall chamber was to be moved so that the chamber could become a kitchen. A porch was built in front of the building. On the southern boundary, the dwelling had comprised a combined baking room and sauna, a small chamber and hallway. Now the wall between the hall and the chamber was removed and a porch was built in front of the entrance. The building on the northern boundary had had two rooms, a hall and a small pantry. Now the wall between the chamber and the hallway was moved and a kitchen was added to the building. The tiled stoves on the outside wall were replaced by new ones, placed at the gable end of the building. A porch was added in front of the entrance. The wing of the outbuilding was demolished and the building was extended parallel to the property line. All the buildings were re-clad.

In the residential buildings it was three-tiered neo-renaissance planking and in the bakery building it was horizontal planking. The street-side building had a lily moulding above the T-shaped windows, while the other buildings had similar but simpler mouldings. The lily motif was repeated in the upper part of the gateway.

In 1906, a small kitchen was added to the side of the courtyard next to the porch. The previous kitchen became a pantry again.

In 1982, a new outbuilding was built on the western boundary of the plot, which provided a sauna, a laundry room and storage space for the Puandi residents and the city tenants living in the buildings on the neighbouring plot, Vahala. The small bakery building on the site was found to be so dilapidated that it was replaced by a similar new building in 1984. In 1987, the residential buildings were renovated. The building along the street was converted into a single apartment with modern washrooms and kitchen facilities.
